Thanksgiving part 2!!

Happy Thanksgiving (again!). This time we went to Nick's mom's house and spent time with his family there. It was lots of fun (and LOTS of football), but all the right teams won (according to most). Here are some pictures of our visit:

Black Friday

Yes, we did it! It is now 8:19, when most people are getting up, and Nick and I just walked in the door from our shopping trip. We went to three Targets, Fry's Electronics, and CVS. I got a few more of the free items after ECBs at CVS that you can see in the picture, but I can't show everything else, since it was mostly Christmas gifts. We had a very fun morning and the stores weren't very crowded at all. We didn't have to wait in line at any store. Nick would never admit to it, but he enjoys it more than I do!

CVS on Thanksgiving

People think we are nuts enough for going shopping on Black Friday (which Nick and I fully intend to do tomorrow morning at 6am). But shopping ON Thanksgiving day??? Only one store could get me out on a day like today, and that, of course, is CVS. My mom and I went out to two different CVS's while the turkey was cooking. I saved 95% and purchased the following:
  • 2 Colgate toothpastes
  • Garnier Nutritioniste face wipes
  • Hershey's chocolate bar
  • 3 G2 Gatorades
  • 2 Complete contacts solutions (FINALLY found them in stock)
  • Cover Girl powder
  • Cover Girl foundation
  • Aussie shampoo and conditioner
  • Philips headphones
  • Johnson & Johnson lotion
I had planned to also get Soleil razors, but they only had two left at one of the stores, so my mom got those. I may sneak another trip in tomorrow to see if they have some razors and a couple of other items, but I might have to blindfold Nick to get him to go with me.

In two transactions, I used coupons, $36.44 in ECBs, and $4.45 and I now have $72.61 in ECBs!!!! I'm going to have to spend some of those ECBs, because that is a lot to try and roll each week. Oh well!!

Best of all, I got my mom doing deals now. She paid $9.01 (her first time at CVS so her total was a bit higher than mine) and now has about $25 in ECBs.

We had lots of fun!

Thanksgiving at my family's house!

We had a great afternoon at my parents' house. YUMMY food (I couldn't resist taking pictures):

Pecan pie (the sample I had was delicious)

We also enjoyed green bean casserole, collard greens, dressing, mashed potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce, sweet potato pie, and blueberry pie. Everything was great!

Family pics:

Okay, maybe none of us are normal:

Nick and his dad with matching beards:

We had a very happy Thanksgiving! I hope you all did too!

Happy Turkey Day!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!! I'm looking forward to a wonderful day spending time with family, eating yummy food, and what else? A trip to CVS for all the great deals. I woke up to a big fat newspaper sitting in my driveway and have already been drooling over the ads. I'll update later on what I got. In the meantime, have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Tuesday night movie night??

Nick was able to take today off from work, so last night we decided to watch a movie! What else? We love to watch movies. This time we chose The Illusionist, which is a favorite of ours. The only bad thing this time was that we had so recently watched The Hulk that we kept expecting Edward Norton to turn into him in this movie, which didn't happen. But other than that, we enjoyed it yet again. And now I get to have my hubby home today!! Yay!

13 days to go

I'm so ready to get into the spirit of Thanksgiving and Christmas. You can see by my new background that I'm trying. But until my classes are over, I think I'm permanently stuck in stressed-out land. As I write this, I'm on my lunch break from writing a paper, which is currently 19 pages long and nowhere near done. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to be on page 19 instead of page 1, but every time I read it over, I cringe. It is going to require a lot of editing.

Meanwhile, my other professor, whom I think is a wee bit sadistic, just popped in with ANOTHER assignment for us to do. As if the three I'm still working on for his class weren't taking up enough of my time.

I had really hoped to get enough done by tomorrow night so on Thursday I could relax and enjoy time with my family (and plan my Black Friday shopping extravaganza), and while I might have to take the day to do just that, I am thinking I won't have enough done to be completely relaxed.

Sooooo, 13 days to go. The countdown begins.

200th post!

In honor of my 200th post, I thought I would write my 200 favorite ice cream flavors.

Just kidding!

I'll divide by 10 and just write 10 products to which I am no longer brand loyal since couponing and 10 products that I am still loyal to no matter the cost:

Not picky about:
  1. Deodorant - I used to be all Dove, all the time, but now, as long as I don't stink, I'm ok!
  2. Shampoo/conditioner - though there are some I don't like as much as others
  3. Toilet paper - free = good enough for me!
  4. Makeup - I'm not completely over Clinique yet, but I'm getting there
  5. Contacts solution - some are better than others, but cheap is good
  6. Face wash - though I did get some once that smelled like feet
  7. Body wash - see reason under deodorant!
  8. Toothpaste - Crest, Colgate, Aquafresh, whichever is free!
  9. Dishwashing liquid/detergent - they all get my dishes clean
  10. Cleaning products - I used to be a 409 girl, but it turns out they all work pretty much the same - who knew?
Can't change!!
  1. Smart Rinse mouthwash - love it!
  2. Schick Intuition razors - I've tried the rest now, but this one is my favorite.
  3. Kleenex brand tissue
  4. Q-tips - I'll wait for a good deal, but I gotta have the real thing
  5. Colgate 360 toothbrushes - my new fave!
  6. Del Monte canned vegetables
  7. Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta - just love this brand
  8. Cereal - Cheerios and Oatmeal Squares - nothing else compares
  9. Laundry detergent - I'm loyal to my brand even if it isn't the cheapest
  10. Bisquick - must have for pancakes, waffles, and biscuits - no other brand is as good
So after 200 posts, I've changed some, but am definitely set in my ways in other. Good thing the shampoo/conditioner category alone saves us nearly $40/month (I used to have expensive hair care product tastes!).

Menu Plan Monday

Monday - pecan crusted chicken tenderloins, salad, fruit
Tuesday - three cheese chicken and pasta, green beans
Wednesday - filet mignon, baked potatoes, broccoli
Thursday - Thanksgiving dinner at my mom's
Friday - order pizza
Saturday - Thanksgiving dinner at Nick's mom's
Sunday - stuffed shells, salad, breadsticks

Saving money at Publix, Walgreens and CVS

This morning I ran my 4 miles and then got ready for the day. I stopped in at Starbucks where I used a gift card to get coffee, and then a coupon for a free drink printed on my receipt! Score!

I stopped in at Walgreens, which isn't a normal stop on my route. But they had a razor Register Rewards deal that allowed me to get some Dasani water for $1 each. The razor was $9.49, I had a $4 coupon, and it printed off a $6 RR. My second transaction was $2.14 after RR and sale price on the Dasani.

Next was CVS, which was disappointing today.

I got:
  • 2 Maybelline makeup
  • Memory foam pillow
I used:
  • 2 $3/1 Maybelline coupons
  • $3/$15 coupon
  • $17 in ECBs
  • $2.45 oop (my ECBs are rather large, which makes getting my oop down harder)
I got back $20.98 in ECBs, but the disappointment was that they were out of contact solution, which is free after ECBs this week. I tried two different CVS's and they were both out. Oh well. I plan to go at least two more times this week so I will give it another shot later in the week.

Lastly, I went to Publix:

I saved 60% on the groceries pictured above. I bought:
  • 4 12-packs of Cokes = $3 each
  • 2 6-packs Coke Zeros = $1.50 each
  • 7 cans DelMonte vegetables = $0.05 each
  • 10 Martha White muffin mixes = $0.02 each
  • 2 jars O'Charley's honey mustard = $1.95 each
  • Bleach = $0.01
  • 2 Crisco vegetable oil = $1.35 each
  • Taco Bell sauce = $1.49
  • Parmesan cheese = $2.49
  • Bread = $2.99
If I had not been out of Parmesan cheese, bread, and Taco Bell sauce I would have done better. All in all, though, a great trip to Publix!

Recipes

A few people have asked me for the recipes that we used last week. So here they are. They can each be adapted to make more or less, depending on how many chicken breasts you are using.

Chicken Parisienne

1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced (can be eliminated)
1/4 cup flour
1 cup sour cream
6 boned chicken breasts

salt and pepper
paprika

Cooking day instructions
Mix wine, soup, and mushrooms together. Stir flour into sour cream and add to soup mixture. Place mixture together with chicken in freezer bag. Freeze, using freezer bag method (place in gallon Ziploc).

Serving day instructions
Place chicken and sauce in Crock-Pot. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and paprika over top. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.

1/4 cup soy sauce
3 T. chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 T. olive or canola oil
1/2 t. ground pepper
1/2 t. ground ginger
1/2 t. red pepper sauce
1-6oz can orange juice concentrate
8 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

Cooking day instructions

Pecan Crusted Chicken Strips

Ingredients
10-12 boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 cups honey
1 cup spicy brown mustard
3/4 cup olive oil
1 T. salt
1 T. granulated garlic
1 T. black pepper
3 cups panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) -- we used regular breadcrumbs
1 1/2 cups pecans, finely ground
6 one-gallon freezer bags, label 3
3 one-quart freezer bags

Cooking day instructions
Rinse and trim chicken as desired. Cut each half breast lengthwise into three strips. Divide chicken evenly among the three unlabeled 1-gallon freezer bags. Combine honey, mustard, oil, salt, garlic, and pepper in a medium bowl. Divide sauce evenly over the chicken. Seal bags. Into each of the three 1-quart freezer bags, measure 1 cup panko and 1/2 cup pecans; seal. Place one bag of chicken and one bag of pecan/breadcrumb mixture into each labeled 1-gallon bag. Seal and freeze.

Serving day instructions
Completely thaw one entree in the refrigerator. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place breadcrumb mixture on a plate. Shake excess sauce off each piece of chicken, roll in crumbs, and place on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes, or until chicken pulls apart easily and is no longer pink in the thickest part, and crust is golden.

Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Feta, Spinach, and Ham

Ingredients
8 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
salt and pepper to taste
3 oz cream cheese
1/2 cup feta cheese
1/2 cup baby spinach leaves
8 thin slices ham

Cooking day instructions
With a knife, make a split along one side of the chicken breast to form a pocket. Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper. In a small bowl, mix together the cream cheese and feta with a fork. Stuff each chicken breast with the cheese mixture, spinach, and ham. After chicken breasts are filled, wrap individually, put in Ziploc, label, and freeze.

Serving day instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place frozen chicken breasts in a baking dish coated with non-stick cooking spray, and bake, covered with foil, for one hour or until tender. You can also defrost the chicken breasts and bake them, covered, for 45 to 50 minutes or until tender.

Movie night Friday

Nick and I watched two movies last night, one of which was not worth mentioning, so I won't. I'm glad we saved the second one, The Incredible Hulk, for last. It was really great! I didn't expect to like it too much, but I do like superhero movies, and this definitely was a superhero movie. It also has Edward Norton in it, who is one of our favorite actors. It was a fast-paced and exciting thriller, and of course, left it open for a sequel. After that, Nick went to play a computer game and I watched my token girl movie of the night...While You Were Sleeping. It has been years since I've seen it, but I still love it!

What a day!

I'm pooped!! I had big plans of finishing the rough draft of my paper (for which the deadline is rapidly approaching), but I think instead I'm going to relax for the rest of the afternoon before Nick gets home (and maybe do a load or two of laundry). Here is what I did today:
  • Way too early in the morning: I did NOT get up and go running as I had planned. My bed was so warm and the wind outside my window sounded so cold, so the bed won.
  • 9-9:30 - I taught piano
  • 10-11 - I went straight from my piano student's house and tutored
  • 11:15 - I met my friend Beth for a CVS run and coffee at Starbucks, which is quickly becoming our tradition. Funny story: the cashier who checked us out was very nice as Beth purchased her items, gave him her coupons and ECBs, but told us the story of an "idiot" who came in and paid $0.50 every week and got tons of items that "he could never use" and "probably sells". I was getting pretty nervous, because sure enough, my total came to $0.66. He asked me if I was related to the man. I think I will avoid that cashier for awhile!
  • 1:15 - I went straight from coffee to Bible study.
  • 2 - returned books at the library
  • 2:15 - Tried at another CVS to locate the elusive L'Oreal old person cream, which was free this week, but I will be missing out on. Oh well. I heard it wasn't all that great anyway.
  • 2:30 - bank
  • 2:45 - Walmart, where I got two movies for tonight from Redbox, which allows you to rent movies for $1/night. Our Blockbuster is in the same parking lot as the Walmart, but they charge $4+, so Redbox is definitely a better option. I also got some free items after coupons, and picked up some cat litter, which is never free, but always necessary.
  • 3:00 - Aldi for some milk and butter - best prices in town
  • 3:10 - finally home, where I checked the mail and got some more coupons, including one for $2/Schick Intuition razor. I wrote to the company last week telling them how much I like their product and they sent a coupon and thank you letter in return!

So you see why I need a little break from my go-go-going! I'm thinking some hot chocolate and a nice book to read is in order before I start thinking about dinner.

CVS loves me!

Oh, and in addition to a $4/$20 beauty purchase coupon I got in my email today, I also got a booklet that had one coupon per week for the next 9 weeks, most of which were $3/$15 purchase. Very exciting!! I think I'll go tomorrow to show them my appreciation. :)

CHICKEN (up to our ears)

Today two friends and I made some chicken dishes for the freezer. Chicken is on sale at Ingles this week for $1.68 a pound, so we really stocked up (38 pounds, to be exact):

We cut up all the chicken (well, mainly Emily did)

(this is not even CLOSE to how much chicken it was)
and then we made three recipes.

Chicken Parisienne

Cream of mushroom soup, white wine, mushrooms, flour, sour cream (sans the mushroom for Emily's and my batch).

Chicken stuffed with feta, ham, spinach, and cream cheese

Pecan crusted chicken tenders
(marinated in honey, spicy brown mustard, olive oil, and spices)

and Orange Teriyaki chicken

While we cooked, the kids slept, played, and watched movies

Two of the exhausted cooks!

So after all of that, I have 10 separate meals already prepared and ready for cooking! If anyone wants the recipes, email me and I'll give them to you.

Shopping marathon

To prepare myself for the grueling task of shopping most of the day, I went to the gym and ran 4.5 miles this morning. Then I was nice and pumped up, so I hit the following stores:

1) Publix
At Publix, I bought;
  • Publix brand American cheese (penny item) - $0.01
  • 2 Coffeemate creamers - $0.50 each
  • 2 Swanson chicken broth cartons - $1.50 each
  • 2 Fresh Express salad blends - free
  • 1 bag Publix brand flour - $0.59
  • McCormick garlic powder - $2.49
  • 3 cans Betty Crocker frosting - $0.10 overage on each
I spent $7.06 and saved $22.87, a savings of 76%.

2) Rite AidI bought:
  • 2 boxes Q-tips - $0.99 each (normal price $3.29 each)
  • St. Ives Elements face wash - $2.99 after coupon (normal price $6.99)
I spent $5.39 w/tax and will get back $4.99 in a rebate check at the end of the month, so a savings of 95% when all is said and done.

3) KrogerThere are a couple of things you can learn about our family if you look at this picture carefully. One, we are very cheesy - I bought 7 bags of shredded cheese, which will hopefully last us a month, but probably not. Also, I bought lots and lots of Cokes. We go through those pretty quickly as well. And yes, toilet paper too, but really we don't go through that nearly as quickly as I "buy" it. But who can pass up free toilet paper!?? (Just don't tell Nick!)

I won't detail everything since I didn't get to 50% savings (cheese, while cheap-ER this week, is still not cheap!)
  • 4 12-pack of Coke products - $2 each after sale and coupons
  • 2 6-pack Coke Zero bottles - $1.17 each after sale and coupons
  • Kroger cheese - $1.60 a bag after sale and Shortcuts coupon
  • Cottonelle - free after coupons (Shortcuts and paper)
  • 5 lbs ground beef - $1.84/lb after sale and Shortcuts coupon
I spent $44.87 and saved $32.77, a savings of 42%.

4) CVS
Good old CVS!
Got:
  • 1 16-pack of Duracell AA batteries - $9.99
  • 2 8-pack of Duracell AA batteries - $11.98
  • 4 Glade smell good thingies - $10
Used:
  • 3 $0.75/1 Duracell coupons
  • 2 B1G1 free Glade smell good thingies coupons
  • $3/$15 purchase coupon
  • $21.59 in ECBs
  • $0.65 out of pocket
I got $20 back in ECBs, spent $0.65 on $42.50 worth of merchandise, which is a savings of 99%.

5) Kohl's

No picture for Kohl's because I got a Christmas present for someone I know who reads my blog and he/she/it should not see it. Also, I had a gift certificate from a friend and used it to buy myself a sweater. I love Kohl's because everything is ALWAYS on sale (lowest prices of the season every week!), so the numbers look really good.

I saved 67% at Kohl's.

6) Target
Pictured are the items I got on sale or used a coupon on. I also purchased some other items for Christmas presents, and some items that were on clearance or on a good sale this week.

I got:
  • 16 cans Del Monte vegetables (green beans and corn) - $0.25/can after sale and coupons
  • 5 Smart Ones meals - $2.04 each w/mf and Target coupons
  • Senseo coffee pods - $3.79 each (on sale for $0.50 off)
I saved 61% at Target on my entire purchase.

Total value of merchandise purchased today: $421.52
Total amount out of pocket: $148.52
Total percent savings: 65%

And now, I'm exhausted and am going to go do laundry, write a paper, and straighten up the house!

Movie night extravaganza

Last night was movie night!

First we watched August Rush, which is swiftly becoming one of my favorites. It is such a sweet movie and the little boy who plays August is such a wonderful young actor! His expressions just make the movie. If you love music, this movie will especially appeal to you.

Next we watched The Last Starfighter. I know. This was a favorite of Nick's back in the 1980s and he recently found a really good deal on it and purchased it. It was an amusing, silly, have-to-laugh-because-it-is-just-so-dumb kind of movie. But the funny thing is that when the credits came up at the beginning I happened to notice that the same writer, Nick Castle, wrote both the The Last Starfighter and August Rush! How funny that we would choose to watch those two and both were written by the same person!? And what opposite movies for him to have written! There can hardly be any two more different movies!

Then Nick went to go play a computer game so I decided to start a movie that I could watch while falling asleep, but instead, ending up watching the whole thing. There are just some movies that I can watch over and over again.

Friday favorites

Today was a great day. Nick stayed home sick, so it was nice to have him around. And the following is a list of reasons today was full of favorites:
  • Cheez-Its were BOGO at Publix today and I love Cheez-Its.
  • My piano student is doing wonderfully and some things we have been working on are clicking!! I love it!
  • I started, worked on, and completed a presentation that is due next week.
  • I got three loads of laundry done before dinner (the favorite part was that they are DONE, but the doing of them...not so much).
  • Dinner is (going to be) filet mignon, garlic cheese biscuits, mashed potatoes, and broccoli (some of my favorite foods).
  • It is supposed to be very chilly tomorrow, so there is a lot for me to look forward to.
  • It was rainy and nap-worthy weather outside, which I enjoy (as long as it doesn't happen every day).
  • I got to play some Christmas music from my new piano book.
  • Tonight is movie night! Yay!!

Spritz Cookies

I don't have a ton to say today. It has been a run-of-the-mill Thursday for me, with school this morning and lesson planning since I got home. Before I go spend the rest of the day grading papers, I thought I would post a blog entry, but for lack of something super interesting to say, here is a favorite recipe of mine. This one was passed down from my mom, and I believe she got it off the packaging from her cookie press that she bought many years ago. There is no recipe that I have found that matches it (and for awhile, we tried to match it because we lost this one). I know it is super early, but I'm starting to think about Christmas (I even bought a piano book of Christmas songs today) so I was inspired to post this:

Spritz Cookies
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp lemon extract
  • 2 1/4 cups sifted all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder

Cream shortening. Add sugar gradually. Add egg and extract. Sift dry ingredients together. Add dry ingredients to wet slowly. Chill 10 minutes. Pack into cookie press. Bake 8-10 minutes in a 400 degree oven.

The picture above was from Google images and not from my kitchen. Though I'm starting to get in the mood, I'm not quite there yet! I'll make them in a couple of weeks!

Book talk

In class tonight we are sharing children's books in the historical fiction genre. Since I read everything I could get my hands on when I was a child, I read a ton of books of this type. But one of my favorites was A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver by E. L. Konigsburg. This is the cover as I remember it:
And this is how it has been updated, I'm guessing to appeal to a more modern audience:

However, you can't judge a book by its cover, as they say. This book is about Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife and mother to several kings of England and France in the Middle Ages. In the book she is waiting in heaven to find out if her second husband, Henry II, will join her. Amusing premise aside, it reveals a lot about her history as queen as she reminisces about some of her experiences. She was a fascinating historical figure and this book opened a door to my interest in Tudor history. Excellent read for all ages!

Nice and cozy

Nick and I keep a cold house. We've not yet turned on the heat in our house and it has dipped into the 30s several times now. Right now the thermostat reads 64 degrees. Nick isn't home to "enjoy" the frigid temperatures in here, but I am. I'm pretty sure I warmed myself up just by walking outside. I like cold weather and I don't mind being cold, but I do need the use of my fingers to write my paper. So instead of turning on the heat, which I'm determined to put off as long as possible, I pulled the space heater downstairs into the office and have it on full blast right at me. I have a warm sweater and my pink fuzzy slippers on and a hot cup of coffee.

And now I'm really going to work on my paper.

Really.

Note to self:

When doing Nick's laundry, check his pockets BEFORE placing garments in the washer. Nails probably shouldn't go through the wash.

64% savings at Publix

I did much better at Publix this week. I purchased everything in the picture for $20.15 and saved $36.24. Here is what I got:
  • Gallon of milk - $3.45
  • 6 Martha White muffin mixes - $0.46 each after sale and coupons
  • 2 Pillsbury brownie mixes - $0.46 each after sale and coupons
  • 2 Crisco sprays - $0.46 each after sale and coupons
  • 4 Scotch tapes - $0.50 each after sale and coupons
  • 2 boxes of Saltines - $0.90 each after sale and coupons
  • 2 boxes of Bisquick - $2.69 each after coupons (these were not on sale but my coupons were expiring this week and we use this a lot)
  • Publix reusable grocery bag - free w/purchase of Healthy Choice Steamer frozen entree
  • 1 Healthy Choice Steamer - $1.25 after sale and coupon
  • 2 College Inn chicken broth - $0.40 each after sale and coupons
  • 1 bottle Welch's grape juice - $0.01 (weekly $0.01 item, which was supposed to be Publix brand hot dogs, but at my store was grape juice - I lucked out!)

CVS: Paying me to take stuff home

Another good day at CVS. This is the third week in a row I've made money at CVS, so I'm happy (well, made Extra Care Bucks, anyway!).

I purchased:
  • 2 Listerine Agent Blue mouthwashes - $3.99 each
  • 1 box Always pads - $4.99
  • 1 Smart Water - $1.59
  • 3 Palmolive dishwashing liquid - $1.49 each
  • 1 Garnier Fructis hairspray - $2.99
I used:
  • 2 $1/1 Listerine coupons
  • 1 $2/1 Always CRT
  • 1 $2/1 Always manufacturer's coupon
  • 3 $0.25/1 Palmolive coupons
  • 1 $1/1 Garnier Fructis product coupon
  • $11 ECBs
  • $3/$15 purchase
  • $0.63 out of pocket
I received back $13.59 in ECBs ($3 from the Palmolive, $1.59 from the Smart Water, $1 from the Always, $2 from the hairspray, and $6 from the mouthwashes) for next time, so a "profit" of $2.59.

Now, do I need any of this? Of course not, but was it worth $0.63 to me?? Absolutely!!

Menu Plan Monday

Monday - Barber chicken breasts, green beans, pasta
Tuesday - hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, salad
Wednesday - cheesy chicken bundles, rice, broccoli
Thursday - Hamburger Helper, salad
Friday - filet mignon, mashed potatoes, asparagus
Saturday - Hash brown soup in bread bowls
Sunday - Emily cooking
