Lately

Lately I've been:

Celebrating birthdays with family:

Hanging out with friends:

Beginning lesson plans for next year:
Also: cleaning my house room by room, reading TONS of books (new ones and old favorites as well), watching movies, attending meetings for school, soaking up as much fun times with friends as I can before my schedule gets full again, and staying busier than I'd like during the supposed-to-be lazy (and extremely hot) summer days. Not on the list lately has been blogging in this blog...oh well, I'll try to be better!

On the next episode of "Hoarders"

There is a TV show called "Hoarders" where people who can't bear to part with things are given the opportunity to start getting rid of the junk they've accumulated over the years. It is extreme -- they live in piles of garbage (sometimes quite literally) and have little room to move in their homes. It really is pretty sad, so I'm prefacing this post by saying that our house is not nearly that bad. However, my dear sweet husband is prone to hoarding boxes. For example, we have the box that our PREVIOUS laptop came in (purchased at least 6 years ago and no longer working). We have boxes from computer parts, DVD players, cameras, etc etc etc. All empty. Many of which we've long since thrown away the contents. And none of which Nick can bear to part with.

But not anymore. Today, I purged the house. We have three extra bedroom closets that we've used as storage for quite awhile, but I'm tired of it being like that. I decided to make one bedroom closet storage for things we use fairly regularly or don't want to put in the attic, but the other two will be ready to receive guests. So that means we have to get rid of a lot of the things we've been storing. I spent all day working on the rooms and I got them almost completed. The only two tasks remaining are getting the Christmas decorations in the attic (prior to which we'll have to remove the stacks of empty boxes from it), and Nick will have to go through the enormous pile of empty boxes that I left for him to go through. I didn't want to throw away something he really does need (I've done that before in a fit of decluttering). Once that is done, we'll have three livable bedrooms upstairs and minimal clutter. Feels good!!

Maybe we have a few more years before anyone nominates us to be on that show!

No pictures to protect the innocent (me) and the guilty (Nick). :)

Check!

Item #2 can be checked off this list! I got all my pictures organized on the computer, by year and then by season. It took three days of concentrated effort, but once I got started it wasn't too bad. And it was fun to find old pictures from 4, 5, 6 years ago. Here are a few gems:

Book Review

Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay

I read this book in one sitting, even though it is 300 pages. I just couldn't put it down. It is the story of a child and her parents who were taken by the French government during the Nazi occupation of Paris. They were Jews, but it wasn't the Nazis who arrested 13,000 Jews on that night in 1942; to the shame of the French, it was their own countrymen under orders from the Nazis. Almost none of those taken from their homes that night came back alive. The event, called the Vel d'Hiv, is a true story from history, and De Rosnay has portrayed the horror of that time with vividness. Woven into the story is a modern story of a woman who discovers the horrible past of her country and becomes attached to the story of this little girl. She sets out to discover what really happened that night and what became of the little girl.

Very moving, and a very powerful story. A haunting book, but worth the read.

Eclipse

I'm going to be honest with you, my blog-reading friends. I've now seen this movie three times. And it came out last week. Yep! I'm not ashamed to admit it, though my wallet is a bit lighter (um, $8.50 for a MATINEE is highway robbery). I was really pleased with how closely they followed the book and this one was even better than the last two.

It definitely whets my appetite for the next one, Breaking Dawn, which doesn't come out until November 2011 (and that will only be part 1)! I guess I'll have to content myself with seeing the first three a few more times between now and then.

Yawn!

We spent the night at my parents' house last night in order to get Will off to his mission trip this morning. Last night, it was evident that my parents' three dogs were missing them. The two little ones cried and cried in their cage for two hours. I just couldn't take it so we let them out and they were SOOO excited to get to come and sleep in the bed with us. I can't say it was the best night's sleep I've ever gotten, but I will admit that after they settled down, they were pretty cute.

This is how Piper and Nick slept all night long.
